Vision In Crisis

April 2012

I am really excited to tell you about the launch of a new charity, and indeed a new concept in providing eyecare to deprived people in wartorn areas. This is the brainchild of our very own Kelly Carr. While watching the many news bullitons and documentaries about the war in Afghanistan, she realised that there is probably no provision of eyecare to rural areas.  There are several charities that support Vision care in poor countries but they can only go to fairly safe countries.

There are two features of Vision in Crisis that make it different to other Vision charities. Firstly  it relies on local health workers helping people select the correct glasses with the aid of a flow diagram, an instruction leaflet and a training DVD that will be made in appropriate languages. Secondly only new glasses are supplied. Kelly persuaded  suppliers of frames and lenses to donate stock, and our friendly glazing company, Focus Optical at Nutfield very kindly glazed all the glasses. The advantage of new glasses is that they are much stronger than second hand glasses.  Also the cost of sorting of second hand glasses is not  insignificant.

We have linked up with Afghan Aid as our partner charity who have agreed to  take the glasses out to rural villages in Afghanistan and distribute them with the aid of our instuctional leaflets and DVD.

Vision in Crisis was launched Thursday 12th April. We will keep you posted as to how this very exciting project fares. The picture shows Kelly handing the spectacles to David Page, the Chairman of Trustees for Afghan Aid at the launch.
