Eye Examinations

An eye examination is a thorough check-up of your vision and overall eye health. It includes tests to assess how well you see, check for changes in your prescription, and screen for common eye conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration. Regular eye exams are essential for detecting issues early, even before symptoms appear, helping to protect your vision for the future.

  • The first step of your eye test is assessing your vision and determining whether you need a new prescription. Using a trial frame and lenses, we simulate real-life conditions, making it easier to evaluate your sight at different distances, such as for reading or computer use.

Once we have measured your prescription, we will discuss whether new glasses would be beneficial and show you the difference a new prescription could make. The choice to update your glasses is entirely yours.

  • To ensure your eyes are healthy, we thoroughly examine your eyes front to back, using a slit lamp and a Volk lens. This allows us to check for any abnormalities or early signs of eye conditions.

We also offer Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), an advanced scan that captures detailed, 3D images of your retina at a cellular level. This technology helps detect macular issues that may require treatment and can also measure the thickness of the nerve layer around the optic disc, aiding in the early detection of glaucoma.

  • For patients over 40, we use the latest technology to measure intra-ocular pressure and assess visual fields. These tests, combined with a thorough eye examination, play a crucial role in detecting and diagnosing glaucoma at an early stage. Regular monitoring helps protect your vision and ensures any changes are addressed promptly.

  • Checking binocular vision is especially important for young children. If a squint (eye misalignment) is not detected early, it can lead to permanent vision reduction in the affected eye. After the age of eight, treatment becomes less effective, making early diagnosis crucial.

Binocular vision issues can also affect adults, sometimes causing double vision or discomfort. In many cases, this can be corrected with prisms in glasses, but a thorough examination is needed to determine the underlying cause.

  • A recent advancement in optometry now allows qualified BSc(Hons). DipTp(IP) Independent Optometrists to prescribe medications for non-sight-threatening eye conditions. Having completed the necessary training and exams, we are certified to prescribe ophthalmic treatments, providing faster and more convenient care for a range of common eye issues.

  • Excessive watery eyes, especially in windy conditions, can be caused by either excess tear production, blocked tear ducts, or an eye with a compromised tear film. To help with this, we offer a lacrimal syringing service, where we assess the cause of the issue and, if appropriate, flush the tear ducts with saline. This can help relieve mild cases and also determine whether further treatment is needed.
