Hypermetropia

an illustration showing Hyperopia

What is Hypermetropia?
Hypermetropia, also known as long-sightedness (or hyperopia), is a common refractive error where distant objects appear clearer than close-up ones. This occurs when the eye’s shape causes light to focus behind the retina instead of directly on it.

Understanding Hypermetropia in More Detail
Hypermetropia happens when the eyeball is too short or the cornea has too little curvature, preventing light from focusing correctly. People with mild hypermetropia may not notice symptoms, but higher degrees can cause blurred near vision, eye strain, and headaches, especially when reading or using screens. Children can sometimes compensate for it by adjusting their focus, but this becomes harder with age.

How is Hypermetropia Treated?
The most common treatments include prescription glasses or contact lenses, which adjust the focus of light onto the retina. In some cases, laser eye surgery may be an option for long-term correction. Regular eye exams at Nethercott Optician can diagnose hypermetropia and ensure you get the right prescription for clear and comfortable vision.
